segments is a study about the relation between spatial behaviour –understood as a form of Non Verbal Communication amongst humans- and choreography.
The work highlights the different variables conditioning spatial behaviour –distance, orientation, levels, presence or absence of physical contact, individual posture or gestures, etc…- and aims to make the audience have a direct experience of them.
In segments the two performers face each other in a chess game that becomes symbol of tension and conflict generated when one’s personal space is invaded.
While its conventional and personal space is constantly manipulated by the performers, the audience takes part of the action both as spectator and protagonist, witnessing moments of co-operation and competition, intrusion and defence, leadership and hierarchy.
The segments are:
1. Welcome Everybody - Please Come Through (from “Imponderabilia”, Marina Abramović, Galleria d’Arte Moderna, Bologna, 1977)
2. Invasion & Surrounding
3. Distance & Orientation
4. Displacement # 1: Space Orientation
5. Higher
6. Displacement # 2: Distance
7. Re-orientation
Performed at Biblioteca Classense for Ammutinamenti Festival 2010, Ravenna/IT.
