“All human actions have one or more of these seven causes: chance, nature, compulsions, habit, reason, passion and desire.” -Aristotle
HYMN OF CHANCE, a performance installation by ROOMS, six actresses participated in a ritual of chance using two familiar tools of the trade – dice and a deck of cards. The roll of the dice dictated the text, the order, and the emphasis of a handful of universal yet emotionally charged phrases to be spoken by the actresses. The deck of fifty-two cards was used as a unique hymnal when “chance” allowed a human generated sound-scape of providence.
HYMN OF CHANCE continued ROOMS’ exploration of variation through the creation of systems that use repetition, endurance, and chance operation to generate performance. It’s a process that creates an infinite amount of specific moments for audiences to experience, ponder, and enjoy.
