A Resource for Performing Artists, Scholars and Audiences.
My name is
Treiops Treyfid. I am a Performance Artist living and working in Los Angeles, Ca. My work is mostly conceptual in nature including a public intervention aspect. I employ simple and convoluted technology, costumes, and audio.
I design my performances first with a very simple script. The details become realized over time as I conceptualize the piece. I carry the idea in my head until all the problems are worked out. There rarely is any real concrete written or sketched out material. However, the exception being the below script for Plastic Incarntion. I archive my work using video.
Here is a script for "Plastic Incarnation":
----------
Plastic Age Performance (working title)
Performers (7):
Plastic Costume Person 01 - Will be wearing black leotard and black mesh head covering underneath transparent costume made from plastic bags and saran wrap. This represents the individual in the plastic age. Plastic is made from petroleum which is the world's most important resource. Our economy and rule structure is based around this commodity. So this performer is wearing a plastic transparent costume that covers the entire body and it's motions are very limited. It is only allowed to move along a predetermined route. The rules of our plastic society determine this.
Plastic Costume Person 02 - Will be wearing black leotard and black mesh head covering underneath transparent costume made from plastic bags and saran wrap.
Plastic Helpers (2) - Will be wearing white leotard and white mesh head covering. Their entire purpose is to retain the status quo, specifically to cover the Avatar with plastic bags.
Plastic Improviser 01 - Musician will be improvising Music Concrete based on movements of Plastic Costume Person 01. Wearing black business suit.
Megaphone Man (plastic improviser 02) - Man will be improvising large numbers and denominations based on movements of Plastic Costume Person 02. Wearing black business suit. The numbers represent the millions of barrels of oil, dollars, euros, yen, etc. that are traded and used in the plastic age.
Avatar (not like the movie, like the embodiment of heaven on Earth) - nude and painted with red body paint with mask covering part of the face and long black wig. She represents the injured life energy of humanity as well as the higher energy and beauty all individuals and societies can attain. Our life energy is decreased due to the constraints of the petroleum economy that insists on commerce and control.
Script:
Performance takes place in large industrial space. It will be shot as a video so there will be cutaways as well as a full filming of the performance. There will be no audience. Set is decorated with two large painted black circles on the floor. One circle's circumference goes through the center of the other creating a vesica piscis. In the center is a pile of plastic bags.
Scene fades into empty stage with pile of plastic bags on floor. Plastic Costume People fade into scene circling in each of their circles. Shot is from above and in front of the stage.
All other performers walk onto stage. All get set to their spaces.
The Plastic Helpers start limbering up. They stretch and jump around a bit, then they get into place.
They are silent and motionless (except Plastic Costumers who are still circling) until Avatar starts to move out from pile of plastic bags.
From underneath the pile of plastic bags in the center the Avatar slowly emerges by poking head out and looking forward.
Music & Megaphone man start making noise.
Plastic Costumer 01 will walk around it's circle opposite from the direction of 02. Each will have set walking and movement style determined beforehand (walking, hopping, twirling, etc.). If either reach an obstruction, such as the Avatar or the other Plastic Costume Person, then they will turn along the opposite direction of the circle.
Plastic Improviser 01 starts to make sound based on the movements of Plastic Costume Person 01. There will be a difference in the sound (either volume, pitch or intensity) the further or closer on the circle the performer is. Also the performer's gait could influence the sound. When the performer goes into the vesica piscis then Plastic Improviser 01 is free to make any musical decision (could be more intense, more silent, the important thing is that it will be different than the sound made while on the other part of the circle).
Plastic Improviser 02 starts to recite numbers based on the movements of Plastic Costume Person 02. There will be a difference in the numbers the further or closer on the circle the performer is. For instance when the performer is on the outer part of the circle, Megaphone man will count "40 million, 38 million," etc. and as the performer gets closer to the inner circle the numbers will decrease "16 million, 10 million, 5 million", etc. Megaphone man will also change the improvisation when the performer is in the vesica piscis.
Meanwhile the Avatar is creeping around the stage doing slow Butoh inspired dance movements. She is not hindered or restricted by the movements of the other performers. She is in her own world. She can pass over the circles, either creeping or crawling. Her mood and movement is confused as she represents the injured life energy of humanity.
After 5 or so minutes an alarm occurs brought on by the Megaphone Man. Everything stops including sounds, movement. The Avatar drops to the ground in a heap.
Next the Plastic Helpers quickly grab all the plastic bags that were in the center of the vesica piscis and cover the avatar. They are similar to ball boys that will quickly gather out of bounds tennis balls during a match. They are all about speed and quickness. When the Avatar is fully covered they go back to their appointed places.
Once the Plastic Helpers are back in place for a minute the Avatar will slowly start to move out of the bags again and creep around the stage as she did before. The Plastic Costume Persons start moving again and the Improvisers start making sounds again and a new round starts. The only difference is that each performer will have slightly different rules. The improvisers may use different sounds the Plastic Costume Persons will use a different gait. The idea is to try to have each round be different, maybe a little more intense.
After 5 or so minutes an alarm occurs brought on by the Megaphone Man (alarm #2). Everything stops including sounds, movement. The Avatar drops to the ground in a heap.
The plastic helpers again cover the Avatar. The Plastic Costume Persons and improvisers start again. This is the beginning of the third round. The third round is the most intense.
After 5 or so minutes an alarm occurs brought on by the Megaphone Man (alarm #3). Everything stops including sounds, movement. The Avatar drops to the ground in a heap. The plastic helpers again cover the Avatar.
2 or so minutes elapse.
The Avatar rises up and starts screaming at the top of her lungs. All is silent except for the screaming. The scream represents the tipping point in the future when the coming ecological disaster will change the Earth and it's people significantly. Population will drop, cities will flood, etc. This is the point at which hopefully humanity will realize the injury to the Earth and our society, or resource wars and panic will launch us into a new dark age. The result is unknown and so the end of the performance is ambiguous. The Avatar drops to the floor in a heap again. Lights fade out.
Performance lasts approximately 30 minutes.
