A Resource for Performing Artists, Scholars and Audiences.
réaltympanica combines digital media and theatre, creating site-responsive and socially engaged art. Having studied together at Goldsmiths College, the group was created in 2009 at the initiative of Renata Gaspar, Ioana Păun and Robert Redmer. They are based in London and are also individually active in Portugal, Romania and Germany. Their work has also included a series of collaborators from music, visual arts, playwriting, video, graphic design and IT.
ABOUT CONNECTION FAILED:
A live art sound piece, where the audience, seated on a launderette bench in Peckham and wearing wireless headphones, are immersed in the minds of three characters doing their laundry; a German that struggles to obtain British citizenship, a Portuguese that wants to leave the country, a Romanian that has just arrived in London.
The sound shifts from one character to another, jumping inside their thoughts, obsessions, fears, soundscapes, flashbacks, dialects and automatisms. The performance looks at how social awareness and prejudice operate within society, generating friction and distortion. the audience witnesses how three people, without even talking to each other, move in 30 minutes from passive daydreaming to gestures of revenge and punishment. They observe the complex inner processes that lie behind each movement and action: placing gum under a bench, pretending to write an sms, looking out of the window or throwing a bottle of conditioner on someone’s clean clothes.
ABOUT THE TXTS:
Due to the nature of the format, the we had to find a different way of writing the script which would be understandable for both us as performers and the sound artist with which we were collaborating. We decided to split the script into the three protagonists as well as differentiate between three different types of signification which were all happening simultaneously:
1) what the audience sees (BLACK)
2) what words the audience hears (GREEN)
3) what sound effects the audience hears (BLUE)
In order to make the editing and script-writing process easier, we used Google Docs as it allows for simultaneous and multi-location editing and thus get rid of the need for constant emailing with updated versions. It also helped us to relay changes immediately to our sound artist and make these changes easy to find on the script.
