Bio
Sohail Khan is based in Huddersfield WEST YORKSHIRE and has been working in performance and related fields since 1984.
He studied at Dartington College of Arts where he obtained a degree in theatre. He also studied at the High School of the arts in Utrecht where he attended the International class and then went on to study at the institute of Cinematography in Moscow (VGIK) . It was there that he collaborated with Willam Pease in his first piece of live art which was a response to the 93 attempted coup that was taking place in Moscow at the time. Themes that he explores are the processes around notions of what, how and to whom culture(s) are as stories and products. His work relates to how we interpret these stories in our imaginative landscape and the ways we attempt to make a relationship with this to other peoples environments and language.
He collaborates with a diverse range of artists and practitioners. He also relates his performance based practice through work in the forms of writing, film, music, installation and visual art. Sohail most recently performed at the National Review of Live Art 09 and at Spill Festival National Platform. He is now involved in brokering a project with other specific artists and human beings in general that uses as its “in” or its “frame” themes, aesthetics and poetics that are drawn from Tarkovskys film “Stalker.”
As well as currently devising the performance work "O.C.D and the last clearance SALE" for performance installation in an urban environment which is scheduled for Leeds (UK) on the 11/11/11
The title, O.C.D. refers to the artist’s interest in looking at repetitive behaviours in our relationship to reality and imagination. The work attempts to also explore our notions of complicity, trust and responsibility. This performance is participatory where the audience is invited to become a part of the work taking place in the space. The audience is not only asked to interact with each other and the artist to create the performance together. But are also challenged to respond and inhabit the roles ,themes and ideas that occur in the space as the work evolves over 11 hours.
