Whitney Hunter is a Brooklyn-based, conceptual artist born and raised in Chicago, IL. He creates works in digital media, choreography, performance, and installation for the stage, gallery, and discovered spaces. He is also the director of The Big EYE Group, an interdisciplinary, project-based, performance company. He has received a Fund for New Work Grant (Harlem Stages ’09), a new work commission from Thelma Hill Performing Arts Center (’08), Astral Career Grant (National Foundation for the Adv. In the Arts ’06), and a Support Grant (Career Transitions for Dancers ‘03), and in 2007 he was featured as one of Trace Magazine’s “7 NYC Dancers on the Rise”.
Hunter utilizes contemporary art as a medium by which to understand and connect with humanity using public performance events, workshops for artists, and educational outreach for adults and youth as a way of making contemporary art more accessible to all communities.
Whitney holds a BFA in Dance/Theater Arts from Howard University, and will receive his MFA in New Media Arts and Performance in 2011 (Long Island University). Post graduation, Whitney will pursue PhD studies in Aesthetics and Art Theory (Institute for Doctoral Studies in Visual Arts) with a dissertation focus on Contemporary Performance - Practice and Theory.
