Ralph Lewis replied to Caden Manson (Network Curator)'s discussion Entangled: Were you surprised by anything in the book? in the group Book Club
"I am surprised by... how much I could love and hate a book at the same time. Maybe I was hoping you'd chose this book just so I could vent, so apologies in advance for this. I'm about 2/3's through the book, but it's getting…"

Ralph Lewis replied to Caden Manson (Network Curator)'s discussion What is "visual art performance"?
"I'm a big fan of Wagner's gesamt', but not feeling that a lot of the work in Performa was about that. It makes me wonder if using any variation of the word "perform" takes us off the mark. I've mostly heard this…"

Bio
RALPH LEWIS has created and presented original multi-disciplinary works as a co-director of Peculiar Works Project since 1993 with partners Catherine Porter and Barry Rowell, including both the West and East Village versions of their OBIE Award-winning OFF STAGE, 2007's 2-production street theater tribute to the birth of Off-Off Broadway. They co-conceived and co-wrote the documentary performance WELCOME ABOARD THE FRIENDLY TRIPBOX (Judson Church) and spent 3 years with over 100 artists and performers adapting Miguel Cervantes’ classic novel, Don Quixote, culminating in 2004’s epic site-specific performance, IN PRAISE OF FOLLY, throughout the entire 13th floor of the Merchant’s Square Building in Lower Manhattan.

In addition to developing over 100 projects with his PWP partners, Ralph conceived the "Den of Vice" performance party in THE JUDSON HOUSE PROJECT, and explored cyberspace as a performance venue with a bi-coastal performance of his Internet-play PRIVILEGED & CONFIDENTIAL (Gertrude Stein Rep Studio, NYC and Los Angeles Theater Center, CA); and co-created the new vaudevillian [BANNED] BURLESQUE (Collective: Unconscious). Ralph adapted Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s classic short story for WALLPAPER performed in a vacant Duane St. ground floor, and co-wrote/co-directed 3CHRISTS with Barry for the Judson Church balcony, both featuring Catherine.

Most recently, he and Barry co-directed Hallie Flanagan’s depression era agit-prop CAN YOU HEAR THEIR VOICES? in a NoHo “pop-up” store. He also directed PWP productions of William M. Hoffman's A QUICK NUT BREAD TO MAKE YOUR MOUTH WATER in a SoHo loft, staged readings for The Off Project (VIET ROCK, BALLS, MOON, WATERWORKS AT LINCOLN), MITYA'S ORDEAL, Part IV of the Lincoln Center Director’s Lab serialization of Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov (Culture Project); JONAH'S ESCAPE? (Performance Zone and Samuel French Play festivals); aRT (15-Minute Play Festival finalist); BABEL’S CHILDREN (Prism Playhouse); "...TAKE 3..." (The Field's 90 Plays in 9 Days at Hudson Guild Theater); and many short pieces for their BIG ART and 10% PECULIAR performance projects. Other NYC directing successes include 2003’s acclaimed peace event THE LYSISTRATA PROJECT (HERE Arts Center); REMAINS (Turnip Theater Co.); LEAVE THE LIGHT ON (Samuel French Play festival finalist); LET US GO OUT INTO THE STARRY NIGHT (The Kraine Theater); as well as several adaptations of Dr. Seuss works for Barnes & Noble Bookstores.

As an actor, Ralph has worked across all drama, musical, classic and experimental genres in both NYC and regionally, including the original plays IT’S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME, GAT HIM TO HIS PLACE, BEFORE I WAKE, STRIKE OF ’92, and JUST WAR; classic works AS YOU LIKE IT (Fort Tryon Park), THE IMAGINARY INVALID (Westbeth Theatre) and a season with the NJ Shakespeare Festival (HAMLET, ROSENCRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA); musicals such as FANNY with Jose Ferrer (Paper Mill Playhouse), THE BOY FRIEND, and several productions of BARNUM (Claridge Hotel & Casino, AC; John Harms Center, Englewood, NJ; and Darien Dinner Theater, CT); and his film/tv work includes BIG DADDY, STEPMOM, JUNGLE2JUNGLE, LAW & ORDER, NYPD BLUE, QUIZ SHOW, and ACROSS THE SEA OF TIME (in 3D).

Since 2007, Ralph and his PWP partners have been team-teaching interdisciplinary, site-specific performance to Trinity College students for LaMama ETC. He heads a committee for the League of Independent Theater, serves on NYC Community Board #3’s Arts Task Force, and previously was a co-founder of The Artists' Congress (a 3-year collaboration of The Field and NYFA) and stART (the recent arts program at Judson Church). A graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Ralph is a member of Actors Equity Association, Screen Actors Guild and Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab.
