Bio
PIA MONIQUE MURRAY is originally from Brooklyn, New York and has been
dancing since the age of three. While majoring in Dance and African American
Studies at Oberlin College, she had the opportunity to perform Dianne McIntyre’s
Daughter of a Buffalo Soldier with Cleveland Dance Theater. She studied dance forms
of the African Diaspora with Adenike Sharpley and travelled to the Gambia, West
Africa to learn Guinean traditional dance with Alasane Sumak of Fatala African
Ballet. Pia is currently studying traditional Ivorian dance with Vado Diomande and
performing with his group Kotchegna Dance Company. She also performs alongside
emerging pop artist Tecla Esposito and with Rakia Seaborn’s RAKIA! Pia
additionally serves as Program Manager for Urban Bush Women and
Tour/Company Manager for Nora Chipaumire and is the Founding Artistic Director
of the Pia Monique Murray Dance Collective (PMMDC). Her original choreographed
series Fela Suite has been performed at LaMama E.T.C. and Dixon Place among other
New York City venues.

Dance A Day Video Diary

I've decided to keep a video diary of my thoughts and creative process as I take on this challenge. This is the first time I've done anything this public and I believe the behind the scenes occurrences are just as critical as the choreography shared online. Below are my first three entries. Please do respond if you are moved to. I share my every fearful, apprehensive and proud moment in this public forum because I am hoping someone will say "me too" or "I hear ya."
