Michael Helland is a Brussels-based dance artist performing in the works of Eleanor Bauer, Tino Sehgal, and Daniel Linehan. He received a 2010 danceWEB scholarship to ImPulsTanz were he met Ivo Dimchev and has continued to work as his assistant. Prior to this he lived in New York City, performing in the works of Marina Abramović, Big Art Group, Faye Driscoll, RoseAnne Spradlin, and robbinschilds, among others. For his performance in Driscoll’s ‘837 Venice Boulevard’ he was honored with a 2009 New York Dance and Performance ‘Bessie’ Award. His own work has been presented in Brussels at Volksroom and Artpotheek, and in New York at the Chocolate Factory, Dance Theater Workshop, Danspace Project, and in the Scope International Art Fair at Lincoln Center, among other venues. His collaborative duets with Daniel Linehan were also presented in Montreal and Philadelphia through the New Dance Alliance Exchange. From 2007 to 2010 he worked as the curator of the Brink dance series at Dixon Place and was on staff at the artist-run arts service organization The Field. He holds a degree in Dance and a degree in Community and Environmental Planning from the University of Washington in Seattle.
