An installation of a large mandala composed of canned non perishable food goods, 500 - 700 pieces will be displayed on Sept 25 from 1 - 4 pm in the parish hall at the Unitarian Church of Staten Island. The food mandala will be based on the impermanence that the buddhist sand mandalas have in that when the display is over that day the food will be swept away by being delivered to four food banks throughout Staten Island.
Goals for the food can mandala are to make the public aware of the needs of local food pantries. There is an increased need for donations because of the financial recession. "For me this is an opportunity to create my art and at the same time do service for the community by helping to alleviate some hunger and re-educate the public on the problems of hunger in their community."
