Laura Arrington Dance is a San Francisco based experimental performance group founded by Laura Arrington in 2008. LAD has created six original works including The Virgin Sea, Thirty Minutes of Wonderful, Fingerbird, Mostly David, Hot Wings, and Pucker. The work explores and challenges notions of the performing body; pushing it’s physical, emotional, and psychic states of being. Often honing in on how the body relates to gender and sexuality, the work tends to be subversively political and accidently hilarious. My interest resides in the space between representation and experience; riding the line between authenticity and the artificial, in a space that is at once totally empty and totally full. The work has been presented at The Lab, Headlands Center for the Arts, CounterPULSE, ODC, The Garage, Cell Spaces, Mama Calizo’s Voice Factory, Supperclub, and several friend’s home. LAD has been an artist in residence at CounterPULSE and the Garage. In 2011 LAD is in residence at Headlands Center for the Arts, is a resident artist in ODC’s Sandbox Series, and will premier Fox Den at Z Space in December 2011.
Laura/Larry grew up in Louisiana. She has been making performance in the Bay since 2008. Most recently she was an artist in residence at CounterPULSE, creating the work Hot Wings under the mentorship of Joe Goode. She has worked as a guest artist in The University of San Francisco’s Dance and Social Justice Department, as a choreographer for Cutting Ball Theater (voted best theater by The San Francisco Bay Guardian’s Best of the Bay 2010), as an assistant director for Erika Chong Shuch’s Love Everywhere, and as a performer for AXIS Dance/David Dorfman, Jess Curtis, Keith Hennessy, Christopher Williams, Nina Winthrop, and Ellis Wood. She has a BFA from the University of North Carolina Greensboro where she studied Dance, Art, and Gender Studies.
In addition to performance Laura Arrington also creates community based art experiments. Most notably, Arrington's highly successful SQUART! is now in it's second year and co-produced with Ernesto Sopprani/TheOffCenter. SQUART(SPontaneous Queer ART) gathers artists to work in highly compressed time periods. It has had over 120 participant performers and been judged by an incredible roster of artists including Dale Albright, Yannis Adoniou, Rob Bailis, Big Art Group (Caden Manson and Jemma Nelson) Jess Curtis, Keith Hennessy, Kathleen Hermesdorf, Monique Jenkinson, Lex Leiheit, Sara Shelton Mann, Juanita MORE, Nirmala Nataraj, Jessica Robinson Love, Erika Chong Shuch, Meg Stuart, David Szlasa, and Annie Sprinkle.
Laura also curates stupidly fun shows/parties and hosts salons/talks at her house on Balmy Alley.
