Andy Horwitz is getting all over the place

Andy's essay on "Social Practice and Performance" has been generating a lot of interest since it went up this last week. It's the sort of thing that requires really deep knowledge of the field to be able to explore across so many different projects. Over at Howlround, Sojourn Theater's Michael Rohd was inspired to take off from it in a meaningful discussion of the differences between…See More

Bio
Culturebot.org is an online journal of contemporary performance, arts and culture. It launched in December 2003 under the creative direction and leadership of founder Andrew Horwitz. Through previews, interviews, points of view and reviews, Culturebot provides a platform for dialogue and conversation around the performing arts, fostering new voices in critical writing and supporting thoughtful in
vestigation of artists working across disciplines.

Since the site’s inception public programming has been a component of our mission, from the Culturebot Cocktails performance and networking series (started in 2004) to the Culturebot Conversations at the Under The Radar Festival in 2012, we have offered opportunities for artists to share and discuss their work, meet each other and explore critical issues in performance.

2012 marks the beginning of a new phase in Culturebot public programs, as we explore criticism as creative practice and develop new frameworks for collaboration and community engagement.

On Social Practice and Performance

Posted on August 29, 2012 at 1:35pm 0 Comments

The recent “re-discovery” of social practice in visual art builds on a long tradition of socially engaged art in both visual arts and performing arts practices. There are many performing artists (theater, dance, other) currently creating within this framework. I will urge these performing artists to appropriate the language of visual art practice and situate themselves in that tradition, applying to visual arts institutions for financial support, resources and presentation opportunities. At…
