Having withdrawn from studies in Art History and Literature at the Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, Soto entered on a long-term collaboration with director and artist Robert Wilson, with whom he has worked since 1997 as a performer, designer and assistant. Dissatisfied with formal education, he embarked on a mission of self-guided artistic practice, collaborating with artists spanning theatre, dance and contemporary art, presenting work at the Guggenheim Museum, Wiener Festwochen, Walker Art Center, Whitney Biennial, Staatsoper Unter Den Linden, Joyce SoHo, HERE Arts Center, Kampnagel Kulturfabrik, etc.
Soto’s recent work, GIRLMACHINE, created in collaboration with Charles Chemin, was presented as part of Performa 09; PigPigPig (2010) was performed at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art as part of the Qui Vive? Biennial; Have Mercy on Me, a durational work, was created for the Watermill Center’s 2010 Annual Summer Benefit. He has led several workshops, lectures and performances in Berlin, Hamburg, Istanbul, New York and Vienna, and taken part in several international group exhibitions and biennials. Recently, Soto created a short work as part of The Watermill Quintet, an evening of new performance curated by Robert Wilson, presented as part of the Guggenheim Museum's Works & Process. In July 2001, Soto will perform in Robert Wilson and Marina Abramović’s Life and Death of Marina Abramović at the Manchester International Festival, and will design the costumes for the revival of Wilson's and Philip Glass' Einstein on the Beach.
