Originally from Bogota, Colombia, Andrea Peña is a multidisciplinary artist whose creative practice transverses the fields of art installation, choreography and design. Following a professional dance career that included numerous international tours and stints with two of Canada’s most prominent companies, Les Ballets Jazz de Montréal and Ballet BC, she refocused her energy toward developing and directing multimedia choreographic works. Her artistic vision is driven by a desire to explore the conversations among the dancer, creator, audience and the body by creating challenging choreography that pushes beyond mere movement to draw the audience into an atmosphere of experience that is closer to the immersive realm of installation than a traditional dance performance. He works touch on the transgression of our universe, and is recognized for her capacity to create choreographic worlds that envelop the audience in a world rich in humanity and social intelligence.
Peña has received choreographic commissions from the prestigious Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) and Montreal’s Musée des Beaux Arts, along with commissions for Pro Arte Danse in Vancouver. Her body of works have toured nationally and internationally, from extensive performances in Montreal to tours to Panama, Dominican Republic, Cuba and Mexico City. Peña has been honoured with creative residencies at Compagnie Marie Chouinard, Compagnie Jose Navas and Concordia University’s TML Lab, while also being awarded technical residencies at Circuit Est Centre Choreographique in Montreal. In 2016 she was selected as the only Canadian participant amongst a narrow selection of 7 international choreographers, in the prestigious Springboard Emerging Choreographers program.
