►►►Open Call Festival Parachute Light Zero Act II
Paris Les Nautes (21 and 22 March 2015)

Parachute Light Zéro is a natural continuation of festivals held in Argentina between 2000 and 2007: especially, the events of Festival Internacional de Arte Digital which aimed to create an interaction space between novices, artists and professionals of digital art, design, video, photography, music. And also any other event oriented toward experimental practice (performances, installations, etc.) having a link with the audiovisual, such as multimedia production, Vj, Dj, or audiovisual creation of any kind. Each artist, involved, was seeking new forms of expression. The Festival Internacional de Arte Digital was the first festival of this kind in Argentina, and the first real space distribution of independent Argentinean artists’ works working with digitization of sound and image through various media.

Chasers is an A/V mashup band whereby performers use customized digital instruments to distort, fracture and remix American and French cult films.  In the age of recycling and innovation, this trio comes together with new technology and our old fond memories of popular culture. Their work process highlights the art of resampling and repackaging computer manipulation. They are not recreating a film, but juggling with our memories of popular culture and preconceived definitions of narrative image and sound. Cecile and Angie select films from their respective country, France and the USA. They choose a genre, such as spy film (Dr No versus OSS 117), a western (John Wayne versus Belmondo),  silent  cinema (Charlie Chaplin versus Max Linder)or a sci-fi  (Blade Runner versus City of Lost Children).  Selected scenes are edited into short ten-second to one-minute loops and played for roughly twenty-minute pieces.  The film score as well as dialogue from the film is also re-edited into 1-20-second sound loops.

A smart phone is used as a musical instrument; a videobass has a similar function as your remote control than a guitar. Two females, a New York video artist Angie Eng and a Parisian VJ Cécile Lacombe play their Videobasses, computer sensor video controllers in the shape of bass guitars.  Front center is Atau Tanaka, music researcher, scientist and inventor of the modsquad patch for playing music samples via hand gestures on smart phones.

Videobass performers are more concerned with transforming narrative into visual rhythms. They are not remixing film streams into fragmented abstracted video like a club VJ. They want you to see and remember the films, but without its traditional linear narrative. In fractions of a second a few frames spark a memory of the film and its social cultural context. A 10-second sound bite or visual bite is just enough for the audience to explore possibilities; just not expected or preconceived scenarios. Scenes are chopped into pattern and gesture. Moments are automatically cycled forward and backward by the inherent video loop. They work with a loose structure, hitting key synchronized moments. The three do not time exactly when to hit an audio/visual loop.  Instead within a structure they instantaneously respond to what they hear and see as well as chase or follow up with a response. Guided chance is a large part of the harmony in this trio
