Hey Philippe!

There are so many Butoh events going on in Europe, but festivals I know few ones. Every year http://www.butoh-off.com/ and http://www.barcelonaenbutoh.com/ respectively in Basel/Strasbourg/Freiburg and Barcelona make beautiful gatherings of Butoh artists, I worked for them in 2010. This year it happened a festival in Dublin http://butohfestivaldublin.com/, I hope it will have long life.

Maybe someone else can add more festival in this list?

xx

A traveling from me to the stones,
From the stones to the trees,
From the trees to the sun,
From the sun to me,
And from me
to me…

These are all the exercises we are going to try through the course. We will take our minds to a journey. We will pick aback our bodies as well, to a way with many pitches and valleys in front. We will watch the grasses, the sky, the air, and we will face the emptiness. Being grasses, being sky, being the air and being nobody and nothing… The most sophisticate thing to be; being nothing. But, this is the point for us to not to get lost. We will search how to become nobody by our bodies. Becoming nobody and reaching the emptiness. Walking in empty bodies. these are the basic techniques of which
we will try. We will stay unmoving as a tree for years, perhaps.

…to sit as a stone for ages.
…to breathe like the air.
…to move as the wind, as the water, as the sun…

It is possible since we have already got all these elements inside of us. So, they just need to come
up from deep of our existence to be exposed.
The way seems long. Let us harry up…

Workshop details :

Length of each session: 5 hours

Including: Hathayoga technics
Break
Butoh technics – Meditative dance method
Break
Meditative dance exercises

1) Starting every session, we do warm up through method “Cyclic yoga” as well as some other
corporal researches. This part takes 45 min of each session. Through Cyclic Yoga, body and mind will
mutualy influence each other in order to release both physical and psychological complexes. Calming
the body and mind for increasing the concentration are targets of warming up through mentioned
technic. By approaching the stage of subconciousness, we start discovering the border between body
and mind, between action and inaction, between dancing and station.

2) Next step is taking 10 min break for considering emotional changes by Cyclic yoga.

3) Last part of the workshop – which is the main part as well – is based on Butoh, contemporary
dance, Performance art, Poetry. The general subjects are as below:

- Body Stretching (Hatha yoga) to release physically or mentally contractions
- Rebirth and Creation of a new body for new existence
- Experiencing unusual bodily positions
- Discovering the Interior rhythm of everybody’s body
- Listening to and following the music coming from nature
- Moving on Haikus (short style in Japanese poetry)
- Balanced and unbalanced body training and gravity transferring
- Training on Mentally movements
- Natural body tries to stand up
- Perceive the body with keeping it motionless
- Creative images made by muscles
- Surrealistic feature of everyday life
- What my body asks me to show instead of me asking from the body? (What s my body and who
am I?!)
- Getting rid of ordinary movements coming from routine civilization lifestyle
- Alienation of mind and body from each other
- Fantasy images of fancy stories
- Hanging body from the sky
- Moving slowly but not slow motion!
- Differences between dropping body down and falling down?!
- Waving as water, shaking as fire, moving as wind and quiet as the ground
- Different focus points of body in movement
- Drawing on the space
- Impossible situations
- Physically characters (sheets and joints)
- connected bodies (sheets are connecting the bodies)
