Butoh pioneer in Brazil, one of the most impressive and important artists of Brazilian dance, Maura Baiocchi - in Berlin with a workshop, a performance and an artist talk. Take a chance to work with one of the strongest - in her expressiveness and presence within a genius body language, and delight of unpredictable dancing.

After studying classical and modern dance, the destiny paved Maura's way to Kazuo Ohno and Min Tanaka. Later she started her own research, which resulted in Taanteatro... thus she realized the impulse given by Kazuo Ohno within Butoh - to find own dance and expression.

BUTOH BEETHOVEN

Choreography and dance: Vangeline
Music: Ludwig von Beethoven, Geoff Shelton

Costume: Todd Thomas
Photo: Michael Blase

New York butoh star Vangeline conjures ghosts of two passionate giants – founder of butoh Tatsumi Hijikata and composer Ludwig van Beethoven – in her hypnotic, electrifying and award-winning solo performance “Butoh Beethoven”.

“We are drawn into a world of passionate struggle, huge pain and the glories of composition, of performance, of pouring one’s soul into beauty to combat torment… Vangeline’s exquisite control allows change where there seems no movement…” 4-star review by Edinburgh Spotlight

Vangeline is an award-winning Butoh dancer, and choreographer. She is the Founder and Artistic Director of The VangelineTheater Inc, and the New York Butoh Institute. Vangeline's work has been heralded in publications such as the New York Times (“captivating”), Los AngelesTimes, (“moves with the clockwork deliberation of a practiced Japanese Butoh artist”) and LA Weekly to name a few. Time OUT Chicago named Vangeline's, "one of the best Dance Visits of 2011."

Age and aging. Losing our looks and losing our mind. Coping with memories, with regrets, with ghosts of dreams that have died, with fear of death, with letting go.
So much loss, and yet… what do we gain?
Nothing compares with the wisdom of mountains.

Yael Gaathon is the artistic director of the Butoh company Blue Cliff, Aarhus, Denmark. She started her career as a theater actress in Israel and was a member of the internationally acclaimed Itim Theater Ensemble. Today Yael Gaathon choreographs, directs, performs and teaches Butoh and theater, working among others with National Theater School (DK) and the Danish Actors Association.
Her appearance on stage was marked as: „… dance with thrilling energy” (The New York Times), “… one of the cast’s 10 remarkable actors”, "Tall, striking Yael Gaathon...radiates serenity in repose" (San Francisco Examiner), "Yael (Gaathon) ... is brilliant" (Information, DK)

Dancing with Ghosts | Butoh Workshop with Vangeline and Yael Gaathon

18 - 19 June 2016, Berlin, Germany

Vangeline, founder of New York Butoh Institute, and Yael Gaathon, artistic director of the Butoh company Blue Cliff, give an intensive Butoh workshop and performance program “Dancing with Ghosts”
The workshop is open to all interested in exploration and movement, no prior experience in Butoh or dance is needed.

Dancing with ghosts, playing with demons, singing with angels. Through a deep connection to ourselves we enter into a different realm, a world between worlds where the air changes and time disappears. We set off on a journey to find our own dance - our own ghosts, our own demons, our own angels.

Her style of butoh is also strongly influenced by Zen, which she has been practicing since 1997. Today Yael Gaathon choreographs, directs, performs and teaches Butoh and theater, working among others with National Theater School (DK) and the Danish Actors Association.

CONTEMPORARY BUTOH MEETINGS VOL.1

with Vangeline, Yael Gaathon, Nobuyoshi Asai, Motimaru

21 May 2016, 20:00, Tatwerk BERLIN

From now on we hold a series of events to have a chance to discover diverse contemporary Butoh artists, whose remarkable dedication and contribution inspires and makes believe: Butoh has the future, and it is molded nowadays by young contemporary artists.
On one hand, Butoh is much influenced while artists bring their backgrounds; on the other hand, Butoh transmits impulses to other arts, and the results are astonishing.
Let us follow this live movement as it is created by the artists today.

At the Contemporary Butoh Meetings Vol 1, we are happy to introduce in a video interview Vangeline (USA/FR) and Yael Gaathon (DK/ISR), as well as Nobuyoshi Asai (JP). In the third part of the program, Motimaru Dance Company (Tiziana Longo, DE/IT, & Motoya Kondo, DE/JP) will give an artist talk “Esthetic and sensibility of Emptiness in Japanese butoh and comparative analysis of Eastern Culture of India, Bali, Tibet, Japan” + video screening from documentaries of field work research.

The form of soul - 10day intensive butoh workshop with Motimaru Dance Company, Santorini island, Greece, 24th of August - 2nd of September

100,000years ago, when Homo sapiens emerged on this planet, the first human art has emerged in the dark cave, where eyes cannot see. What they were seeing with the eyes of the body-mind is the depth of our unconscious. Times change, but this must be a fundamental principle of human art.
Our everyday life passes, eating, working, or dancing, within a limited cage, burying rich nature within us. Educations, traditions, or even learning dance could mold various forms of cages. Free improvisation could also end up struggling in the same cage. But when we observe forests carefully, so many varieties of forms and qualities of plants, flowers, stones, winds, and sounds astonish us. This workshop is an invitation for diving into the unknown forest of our body-mind, discovering unlimited movements and qualities within us, and transforming the personal journey into universal poems.
